2021 marks the 10-year anniversary of Refracture: An Abortion Film. And the topic remains just as relevant now as in 2011, perhaps even more so. The goal of the project was not to promote a particular view on the issue of abortion, but rather to promote healthy dialogue. When Katie and I interviewed 27 individuals about their views on abortion, it was a true privilege to listen to each person speaking candidly about such a controversial topic. These conversations generated over 10 hours of audio recordings. What a treasured opportunity to be able to listen to people in this way. It was difficult to choose such small portions of these conversations for the script, but the goal was to select key points that were of particular importance to the interviewees as well as those points that naturally fit into the overall “conversation” that came to life in the film.
What had been isolated interviews became a living conversation through the dedication of actors willing to embody the physicality and views of others and the hard work of all of the behind-the-scenes creators who made a quiet black box studio into the psychological landscape that became Refracture: An Abortion Film. – Alicia Riedel, co-producer

"Like, where do you go to have the abortion conversation?
Who do you have that conversation with?"
