Twenty-seven real individuals portrayed by seven actors share their personal and professional perspectives on abortion, creating an open, respectful dialogue about this taboo topic.
Refracture: An Abortion Film was created as a joint honors project at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and was designed to both explore and illuminate one of today’s major controversies: abortion. It seems that there is an uneasy silence surrounding the topic and a general hesitancy on the part of many people to consider views that do not coincide with their own. Without true dialogue, which involves both speaking and listening, all sides are locked in a strained stalemate.
The film is intended to break the silence and promote respectful dialogue. It examines opposing viewpoints on the controversial issue, juxtaposes these views, and explores the relationships among them so that the shared ideologies, agreements, assumptions, and contradictions are brought to light. A fictional “space” for the abortion dialogue is created and populated with individuals unafraid to share their experiences and beliefs. The audience, then, is gently guided into these perspectives that may seem foreign and, perhaps, are led to respect those who hold them. With this understanding, the audience is equipped to speak and freed to listen in a true collective dialogue about this taboo topic.
